Footballers are employees

It’s not often that my humble blog strays onto the subject of football but the media in the last few days have really got my goat…so here goes….

Players have a contract, hopefully they then abide by the rules and do their best. If they don’t play well they are dropped, if they are consistently rubbish they are released by their club and if they are half decent they are sold for a profit. Does anyone have any issue with that?
When I decided that the time was right to move on from my various UK roles I found another job, served my notice period (still giving 100%) and then moved on to a new employer, so why should it be different for a footballer? Is it because they are paid more? Well my salary has been for many years well in excess of the national average wage, does that mean that I should behave any differently to an employee on less pay? I personally don’t think so, after all, if I was not doing my job properly I would be out on my ear and rightly so.

Footballers are usually not fans of the club that they join, sometimes they which is great but the norm is that they move to a club because they think it will enhance both their bank balance and career prospects….what’s wrong with that? The club only buys them because they think they will improve their squad and perhaps sell a few shirts, nothing wrong with that either, as long as both parties know what they are getting into before signing on the dotted line then where is the problem?

I could go on but I won’t, hopefully you get my point!
