People wonder why I left Egypt

What a mess. A country which has always been close to me heart is busily self destructing in front of the rest of the world and possibly heading for a Syrian style civil war.

I have no idea why the decision was taken to forcibly remove the pro Morsi camps as not only has it cost the lives of innocent people but is alienating the very people that are needed to support the transition process. The is starting to resemble the kind of tactics used in Mubarak’s day, the very tactics which contributed to his downfall. On the back of the bloodshed the deputy president has resigned wanting no part of what is going on.

Where does this leave Egypt? I don’t think that anyone really knows, recent events have really divided the country and there remains a significant number of Morsi supporters who will not back down until he is reinstated.

All I know so that until a degree of compromise, pragmatism and a general regard for the national interest then the situation will not improve. Emotions run high in this part of the world and at the current time emotion is the last thing that is needed.
