As a lifelong Manchester United fan their current predicament does not make me happy. Everyone knew that even Sir Alex was not going to go on forever although no one quite expected the end to come so suddenly. For my part I expected United to have a plan for the succession, to have thought through the consequences of Sir Alex stepping down and to have a plan to ensure an orderly handover of power.
It became clear very quickly that this was far from the case. The manager got to chose his own replacement with most people I have spoken to agreeing that he deserved to get to make that choice, the person chosen did not inspire anyone as instead of going for a manager with a proven track record of success at the highest level and with experience of managing a big club they went for a man who ticked neither box. To make matters worse the chief executive stepped down at the same time as the manager which left the club with two very inexperienced men at the helm, the consequence of this was a pretty disastrous summer with the club failing to make any significant signings, in fact not only did they fail to make the right signings but the manner in which things were conducted was somewhat alarming. This was compounded by the frankly baffling decision to replace virtually the whole of the back room staff which at a stroke reduced the experience levels of the management and coaching team and destroyed any hope of continuity. At a time when all of their major rivals were strengthening their squads this farcical summer could not have been more badly timed.
The team has made a pretty poor start to the season which has come as no surprise, weather of not David Moyes is up to the job is not the issue here, what is the issue is that more though should have gone into the transition and he should have been given more support and better advice. Going from a relatively small club with little pressure to win things to one of the three biggest clubs in the world was never going to be easy but the disastrous way in which has been handled has turned a championship winning team into a bunch of also rans.
