Working with good people (last words on the subject)

My final thoughts on the whole idea of bringing in good are around how existing colleagues feel when external people are brought on on potentially higher salaries. This is obviously going to be a bone of contention for many people and the reality is that there are no easy answers. My own view is that you need to be honest about the sort of salary you will be paying externals (everyone always knows what their colleagues are paid and trying to hide the fact that an external is on a higher wage just makes the situation worse) and then you need to focus on the potential benefits to the business. I try and get people to focus on a bigger picture, one where you are able to demonstrate that bringing in talented people improves things for everyone. The other thing to ensure is that your loyal internal staff have been given every opportunity to develop themselves and that they are comfortable with where their career is heading.
My final word on the subject is that if you move company you will probably command a higher salary but at the cost of decreased job security, I suppose that you pays your money and takes your choice on that one.

It’s half term so lots of people are out of the office spending time with their families (work life balance is taken very seriously at BHS and rightly so) which means that I will have time to catch up with some admin!
