Having worked for a number of world class brands I instinctively understand why having a set of strong, clear brand standards is important, I am also abundantly clear as to why measuring adherence to those standards is also important. It’s always a tricky balance between allowing people to my local decisions and thereby encouraging them to be more entrepreneurial and making sure that by doing “their own thing” people are to actually damaging the brand. I am a great believe that the best way to ensure that people follow the standards is by firstly explaining why you are asking them to do things in a particular way and then secondly by ensuring that people on the front line are consulted about forthcoming changes. At BHS I have put in place several mechanisms that not only ensure good communication but which allow people from all levels of the organisation to get involved in key decisions.
Right, time to get ready as I am driving down to Bristol to spend the day with one of our regional directors, hope you all have a nice day!
