My views on our continued membership of the EU mirror my views on an independent Scotland, let the people decide but give them enough information in order to make an informed choice. Whilst this sounds simple in practice it’s quite difficult. There has been a lot of scaremongering on our possibly leaving the EU, predictions of dire consequence for jobs and our economy but I for one don’t buy this. If you create a business friendly environment (low corporation tax, a skilled flexible work force, good infrastructure and low levels of red tape) you will always be able to attract business and if you keep the value of your currency low you will be able to keep your products competitive in the world market place.
The more that I look into this subject the more my feeling that the EU needs us more than we need the EU is reinforced. Perhaps a better alternative is to go back to first principles, the idea of a common market which is what we originally signed up to. What we didn’t sign up to was faceless Eurocrats earning a large salary and adding little value as all they seem to be doing is justifying their existence by churning out ever increasing amounts of red tape and regulation.
Let’s have our referendum, let people make the case for and against and then let the people decide once and for all. We can then hopefully move on.
