Someone once said that changing attitudes was similar to attempting to move mountains and I have to confess that there have been times during my career when I have been compelled to agree with them.
Egypt was perhaps my biggest challenge, spending nine fruitless months trying to explain to people that there business was going badly and that by doing exactly the same things that they had always done was the equivalent of looking East in the hope of seeing the sun set, a further complication was that most people had no idea that there were better ways of doing things.
Don’t get me wrong, Egypt was not all bad, it was a wonderful experience and I made some great friends out there.
Fast forward to today and I find myself working with people who are embracing change, who are looking for solutions to their problems and are not too precious about where those solutions come from. Part of this has been due to my working with fantastic people and part of this stems from the work which I have done to communicate with people across all levels of the organisation. It’s not just about telling people why you are doing something, it’s about explaining why you are doing something.
