I was somewhat taken aback at the number of views my various posts received yesterday as I pretty much have the same number of people visiting my blog on a daily basis but yesterday’s number was double the amount.
In one of yesterday’s posts I gave a few of my thoughts on leadership, especially around the idea of having a vision and a plan.
My thought for today is around people, it’s an old cliche that you grow a business by growing the people but I feel that it still holds true and over my career I have often found that the companies who work hard at developing their people usually succeed. It’s interesting because hardly a day goes by without seeing some new graduate scheme being talked about on linked in and I think that it’s great that companies take in bright young people and fast track their careers. I suppose what really interests me is how internal talent is developed and this isn’t about training courses, it’s about a learning culture where the aspirations and career ambitions of people at team leader level and known and understood by the wider business and more importantly taken seriously. Some of the most valuable learning happens on the job and a companies ability to structure that learning, support it and ultimately make use of the skills and experience gained through it is what really sets it apart from other and what will give it a competitive edge in the market.
