There have been a number of articles in the press recently about Pret a manger which has certainly brought back some memories. I had nine wonderful years there, starting as an assistant manager and ending up as head of city operations. I learnt so much working there and was given so many opportunities to grow as a person and to develop my skills. I have absolutely no regrets about leaving as my time there had run its course, I was on the verge of rejoining them a while back but things didn’t work out.
Whilst it was my favourite place to work it wasn’t my dream job, my role at SSP as UK catering operations director was a role that I loved and I still miss being involved with the UK rail operations (it was like playing with a giant railway set!) what I especially miss is taking the Friday evening train up to Glasgow Central ahead of a weekend of site visits, having four hours to clear down my emails then stepping onto the station late at night and just taking in the atmosphere.
I have been so lucky to have work for both Pret and SSP and had all of those experiences. People reading this might get the impression that I am not happy with my current role and lifestyle but this is not so. I live in a lovely country where the sun is virtually always shining and have the pleasure of interacting with some fantastic work colleagues.
I enjoy taking a trip down memory lane and it’s good to reflect on the last and to learn from it, but I am a man that always looks forward.
