one of the interesting things to emerge from the recent elections is the question of credibility as a leader. Looking at the comparison between Miliband and Cameron, whilst no one will doubt Millibands intelligence, passion and decency ultimately people just did not see him as a credible leader, he lacked a certain something, that air of competence and capability, that statesman like aura which Cameron appears to have.
How does this translate to the business world? Well clearly I am not advocating style of substance as in my experience this tends to have quite disasterous results. I’m also not saying that outgoing emergetic types make better leaders than their slightly more introverted colleagues.
What I am saying is at the very least (this is my humble opinion) you need to project an air of calm confidence, you need to be able to reach out and engage with people with differing responsibilities and be comfortable pitching your ideas. I am also a great believer that beening an active listener and easy to talk to are two valuable qualities.
This is obviously not exhaustive list and I would love to hear the thoughts of others
