its coming up to three years since I left Egypt and the photo below of the Nile reminded me of the fairly turbulent 10 months that I spent out there. Sadly it was a disaster from start to finish! Recruitment executives have a phrase for it, it’s called a “lure and swap” which is where you are enticed with one role only to find that you are doing something completely different when you get there (by which time it’s obviously too late!). In my case I was due to replace the MD of a restaurant group only to find that they were never planning to replace the guy but actually divide the business into “two” and have two expensive, expat MDs. To say that it was a bad idea would be a huge understatement. Without going into detail, I spent 10 months attempting to do a role which I knew was impossible against the backdrop of an armed uprising. I finally walked away when things became too dangerous and returned home. I’m not bitter, I was well paid and gained an enormous amount of expereince and made some fantastic friends. Sadly I have never returned to Egypt and to be honest I’m not sure if I ever will.
