I’ve been involved in some pretty intense projects over the years where it’s easy to overdo things and push yourself too far. These days, I can recognise the signs that I am doing too much and have some strategies to ensure that I don’t get to the point of burning out or becoming less effective because I cannot see the wood for the trees.
I usually become more irritable and emotional about things, I let things affect me as opposed to being able to take a dispassionate view.
As I said, I’m quite good at noticing the these warning signs and when I feel myself getting to the point where I’m not being as balanced in my decision making as I should be I usually head off somewhere quite for a long walk with no phone and no distractions. I spend the time thinking through the previous few days and understanding what it was that was frustrating me. This usually helps me get things into perspective and understand why the way I was dealing with a problem was the wrong way.
A few hours walk, some time to reflect on things and a good nights sleep is usually enough to get my mind back on track. Obviously this won’t work for everyone but I do think that knowing yourself and knowing how you react to stressful situations and ensuring that you are able to adjust your thinking is important
