Will hospitality receive any government support?

The news seems to get bleaker with every passing day. Hyper inflation, strikes, staff shortages and of course a war in Ukraine don’t make for happy reading. In terms of our industry, what makes things worse is nobody in government seems to be talking about how they might support an industry which has already received a battering by Covid lockdowns and which is hit by consumers belt tightening and soaring costs.

So what can the government realistically do? Reversing the corporation tax increase will not make a huge amount of difference to smaller businesses and it’s hardly going to be a timely intervention. Capping commercial energy prices will provide some welcome relief and allow businesses to plan ahead. I would also look at a VAT cut which would give some hard pressed businesses some respite. None of the above is hard to administer no whilst not cheap, could provide immediate relief to our sector.

Finally, another proud father section as my son continues to do well table tennis and is now preparing for the start of the new season
