I don’t for one second think that anything that I write in my blog is going to be either new or instrumental in advancing the debate on leadership in any way shape or form but I would like to add my thoughts to the debate.
There are a number of key things that a good leader should be doing (in my opinion) and over the next few posts I will outline my thoughts
1. Have a vision- I am not talking some abstract purpose which is defined by warm motherhood statements (that would make you a politician, not a leader) but rather a vision for where your business should be within a specified period of time. This needs to be holistic and by that I mean you need to take everything into consideration not just a focus on just one area. Alongside your vision there needs to be a robust, easy to understand and well communicated plan which if followed enables you to realise your vision.
You then need to engage your people and I believe this is best done by being as collaborative as possible when drawing up your plan. You also need to be realistic as to what can be achieved by all means set stretching targets but reaching fort he stars without a spaceship usually ends in failure. You need to stick to your plan in order to have any credibility as I have seen countless business have large conferences where the plan is revealed to a huge fanfare and much excitement, only for it to be forgotten the next day and a new plan wheeled out for the next conference.
Given that time is limited (and to be honest I don’t have much to tell you) won’t be posting anything about my BHS related adventures for a while.
