I’ve come to the conclusion that January is a month to forget. When I was in the salad business it was quite a strong month as many people came out of the Christmas break vowing to (re)join a gym and eat healthily. This attitude only lasted a few weeks as people realised that they were broke after the Christmas “splurge” and struggled to make it to the next pay check whilst worrying about being able to eat anything more that a tin of baked beans.
I’ve always found that the February pay weekend is a good indication of where a business is going to be sales wise.
I’m a keen watch of economic indicators and this week has brought some mixed news, employment is up, wages are still growing faster than inflation and confidence appears to be slowly returning. However, Beales have gone into administration and Intu are reportedly looking for a £1 billion injection of cash, for me these are symptoms of a high street which is still struggling.
